UV radiation and its effect on your skin

UV radiation, otherwise known as ultraviolet wave, is nothing else than the electromagnetic rays emitted by the Sun. They constantly reach the Earth and affect our body, most of course the skin. Due to the wavelength, UV light can be divided into three groups: UVA, UVB, and UVC radiation. How do the different types affect our body? Find out in the article!



The share of UVA radiation in electromagnetic waves is about 95% of all UV radiation. Regardless of the season or weather, this value is constant. UVA penetrates clouds or glass, and also breaks the barrier of the human epidermis. This causes these rays to reach the dermis and cause photoaging of the skin. They also influence the formation of neoplasms. They are also responsible for the so-called immediate tan, which comes quickly after sunbathing and disappears within a few hours.

UVB rays make up about 5% of the radiation. They are of variable value, and most of them occur in summer, during strong sun. UVB rays travel through the epidermis to the skin and cause burns. They have a significant impact on the appearance of neoplasms. UVB is blocked by clouds and glass.

The ozone layer protects us from this type of radiation. Thanks to it, it does not reach the surface of the Earth. The range of UVC radiation is the smallest. This type of wave is the shortest.


UV radiation can have both positive and negative effects. The influence of UV rays not only affects the skin, but also the entire body.

The positive influence of UV radiation includes:
– participation in the synthesis of vitamin D3,
– soothing effect in the case of skin diseases and allergic reactions (psoriasis, acne, atopic dermatitis),
– the appearance of a tan on the skin;
– positive effect on well-being.

The negative impact includes:

– skin photoaging,
– Sun burns,
– skin cancer,
– sunstroke (heat).



Moles, birthmarks or other discoloration are skin changes that should be particularly protected against UV radiation. People who have many such changes on their skin are advised to use filters with a high SPF and avoid strong sun. Exposure to sunlight accelerates skin dryness, and thus the formation of wrinkles as well as acne and postoperative scars. Remember that if you want a beautiful appearance, you should always protect your skin from sunlight. Avoid strong sun, stay hydrated, protect your head with hats, wear sunglasses, and use SPF creams.
